Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC)

The DoD’s CMMC program continues to progress, with requirements already being imposed by some prime contractors. Small- to medium-sized manufacturers are wrestling with the costs and effort to comply, especially implementing CMMC on the shop and plant floor.

Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

Section 889 prohibits the federal government from contracting with any entity that “uses any equipment, system, or service that uses covered telecommunication equipment or services as a substantial or essential component of any system, or as critical technology as part of any system.” Particularly challenging for manufacturers is the application of this requirement to video surveillance equipment used in the facility.

Section 224 of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

Section 224 requires that the DoD establish and then implement operational security standards for trusted supply chains to produce wireless network technologies and microelectronics. The 2021 NDAA extends this requirement to include printed circuit boards.
